Japanese Iris growing in New Zealand

Hi folks, a great heads up.
Eddie Johns of Otara Birch Gardens has had the blog nzata@otarabirch which has being around a good while. The situation has changed a little with Eddie now having returned to better health and has started posting on Facebook where he has loaded up the page with some great photos of his extraordinary seedlings and is inviting visitors to the page to leave their comments! Here's hoping he starts registering them, because they are very classy seedlings and god knows its been a long time since any world class Japanese irises have been introduced in New Zealand.
Otara Birch Gardens grows New Zealand's Premier Collection of Japanese Irises and there would be no better selection of these very fine irises anywhere else in the country.
The blog  is still there with all that valuable information and available to all visitors so if you are starting to ponder on how to start sowing that Japanese or Siberian Iris seed you have put away in the cupboard, now would be a good time to pay the blog a visit.
Just click on the image above and head on over. Don't forget to Bookmark the new Facebook page, and leave some words of encouragement!!!!

After receiving the Lucy Delany Award in 2010, the Standard Dwarf  Bearded Iris 'Alamosa' featured on this years catalogue cover received a Highly Commended award at the New Zealand Iris society Convention 2011. This years catalogue introductions are HENHAM, KIM MAREE, KINKAID, and SAY SO, four new SDB registered by Noel Lapham.
The cold climate of the gardens, produce Medium Size rhizomes which are of good health.  Irises purchased from 'Mossburn Iris Gardens' will adapt well to growing in your garden wherever it is located in NZ. Prices are competitive. Catalogue lists a good selection of Miniature, Standard, Border, Intermediate, and Tall bearded Irises, manly modern irises and of course the introductions of Noel Lapham. I have featured Noel's outstanding introduction 'Prize Lady'  in an earlier post.
Bev and Noel Lapham are the owners of Mossburn Iris Garden, Southland, who are good to deal with and answer emails generally within 24 hours.

New Zealand Iris History

.

.

The above and below scans are from H C Gibbons & Co.1904 Seed, Trees, and Plant catalogue kindly loaned to me by Gareth Winter. The catalogue is 184 pages of early New Zealand gardening plant and equipment history also includes a truly amazing list of sprays that if used today commercially on fruit and vegetables recommended, the grower concerned would be in breach of Health and Safety laws. Can you imagine a food label stating fruit sprayed with Asenate of Lead.

The popularity of Japanese Irises in early New Zealand gardening history is really surprising, and were sold as plants and seeds by several distributors of the time.
Japanese irises where only introduced into England after 1774,but it was not until about 1859 that the cultivar's became very fashionable internationally in gardens, unfortunately this trend became like a short lived Mexican wave .
It should be noted in the bulb catalogue (H C Gibbons & Co.), 30 named Japanese varieties and 40 named German Iris in 1904 is a substantial and impressive listing for that era. To emphasis the point some twenty years later, the A.H. Burgess 1924-26 Catalogue lists 61 Bearded Iris (German Iris)

Big hat tip to Gareth Winter for the use of the catalogues
