Schafer Sacks 2010 Introductions

POMEGRANATE PUNCH. Schafer/Sacks (Seedling No. S03-77-12), 23", EM. A richly colored iris which is a blend of yellow and red purple with orangey highlights on sunny days. The falls have a felty texture, nicely flaring with soft and rolling ruffles. The styles are ornamented with small ruffles and dark red picotee edges. Medium sized flowers are held just above the wide and erect foliage. Three buds present a nice succession of bloom. (Sunfisher x sib to On Her Toes) X (((((Star Cluster x Ruffled Velvet) x (Creme Chantilly x ((Atoll x Ruffled Velvet) x Butter and Sugar))) x Riverdance) x ((Forrest McCord x Isabelle) x Dawn Waltz)) x (sib to Dawn Waltz x Dandy's Hornpipe))
Just arrived from Jan Sacks two photos of Jan and Marty's 2010 introductions. Joe Pye Weeds Garden web site is updated for 2010 , give it a visit and admire the genius of diploid hybridizing. Revisit this post and I will update it with more information when it comes to hand. Ten years ago who could imagine the kaleidescope of colour's, its just amazing.

CINNAMON SUGAR . Schafer/Sacks (Seedling No. S03-28-3), 24", M. An impossible color to describe without using food analogies - the falls are smooth chocolate pink or sugared cinnamon. The standards and styles are the palest violet to cream, both with a warm glow of yellow at the edges. Signals are deep golden yellow softened by self colored veins. A prolific bloomer with stalks well distributed in the compact clump. Small to medium
flowers, four to six buds per stalk. Strong neat foliage. Tree of Songs X sib to Pretty Polly: (Gentle Lass x (sib to Dawn Waltz x Dandy's Hornpipe))

Of course a major hat tip to Jan and Marty for sharing the magic.

Siberian Iris 'SO VAN GOGH'

This is another colour advance from Jan Sacks and Marty Schafer. These smaller flowering species like Siberians are very popular when seen by Garden Visitors and after first viewing rapidly become a must have plant.

Joe Pye Weed's Garden 2005 Introductions
SO VAN GOGH - 2005, EM, 30” Schafer/Sacks
Everyone who saw the large clump of this iris in 2004 mentioned Vincent Van Gogh. The flower is stunningly different, the first bi-color 28-chromosome Siberian we have ever seen with purple standards and yellow falls. It is not a perfect flower, the form is species like and there is a small notch in the end of each fall. It make up for its small flowers size with big clump performance. The standards are a lovely blue-purple (RHS 91B to 90B)with darker veining (RHS 89B at it darkest). The falls are yellow,(RHS 18C)lighter at the edges and darker at the signal, with purple veining (RHS 89A). The styles are blue-purple with darker highlights. There are 3 terminal buds and 1 branch for a total of 5 buds. It starts flowering early and continues for a long time. Sdlg No S97-20-10 Sarah Tiffney X Banish Misfortune

Siberian Iris 'ROARING JELLY'

No feature on Siberian Irises would be complete without including 'ROARING JELLY'.
In New Zealand it was originally imported from America by Eddie Johns of Otara Birch Gardens fame (Shows he has good taste) and in gardens where it grows it still is a sensation.
This Iris consistently features in the Siberian Iris Society 'Favourite Cultivars List' year on year which is voted by the society members. Awarded the Morgan Wood Medal in 1999

Paul Black, now he knows a thing or two about Irises had this to say about Roaring Jelly in his 2005 Mid America Garden Catalogue 'Oh so yummy, the finest Siberian we grow, WOW'

From the Joe Pye Weed's Garden Catalogue 2008
ROARING JELLY - '92, M & RE, 36". Makes a magnificent clump! Falls dappled bright raspberry with pale lavender standards lightly dappled. Flowers full, round and slightly

FOND KISS - 1999, M & RE, 33". A big extravagant flower and an even more extravagant display. Warm white with a large pink flush on the falls. Three buds open in slow succession followed by repeat. AM’04

Fond Kiss was sold in New Zealand so it is growing somewhere in the Country I'm sure

The coming few weeks there will be post with information on "How to grow' and of course where to buy them from. Plus we have been sent some amazing Siberian Iris photos most from the hybridisers themselves. Siberians are sold in the US of A in the Spring and Fall and by Tomas Tamberg in Germany in Spring. In New Zealand Siberians are sold in the Autumn so with the Spring next up in the Northern Hemisphere, and with Autumn next up in the Southern part of the World we can promote the Irises and no one will have to wait to long for their plants to arrive. Visitors will also note a New Siberian Iris Link on the left side column this will make it easier for visitors to link with the growers Web Sites and the Siberian Iris Society for the period of this series of posts.

So "Pick Yourself Up, Dust Yourself Off, and Grow Siberian Iris" I guarantee they will brighten up your day and the garden no end.
